For those who like the wind in their face and the view from above, yet do not have the where-with-all or pilots’ license to own an aircraft, an ultralight aircraft is an answer that can give the pleasure and satisfaction of flying. Although the FAA does not require a pilot license, owners of ultralights take safety seriously and offer lessons to novices who are interested in ultralights for sale.

Some advantages of ultralights are that they do not require much of an airstrip for take-off and landing. They are small and light enough to be transported on a trailer, and many owners save costs by keeping the ultralight at home and transporting the aircraft to an airfield, or maybe their own landing strip on their own property. Because they are so small and lightweight, they are much more cost efficient to fly for pleasure than a small plane, experimental, or light sport.

Learning to fly an ultralight can be accomplished with an instructor and a tandem seat. In just a matter of days, you can solo. There are ultralight clubs so you don’t have to fly alone; these clubs are also a great resource when you are looking for ultralights for sale.

When you have decided to join the many Americans enjoying this sport, you may talk to others who own these planes, look in magazines and periodicals about flying, and contact dealers and brokers, either in person or online. They will give you some great tips on what to look for, as well as help connect you with someone who wants to sell. These people will have more extensive information than a classified ad, and may be able to direct you toward the right craft for your needs.

Flying ultralights is a fast growing sport. If flying is your passion, it is a fun endeavor to get in to.

Can you afford flying when the gas and oil prices are raising like crazy? Hardly. But the fuel has never been free and not all people who like flying are rich. That’s one of the reasons why engineers and enthusiasts invented the ultralight aviation. The ultralight flying machines may not be the most comfortable or luxury, but they are affordable, cute and simple. Besides that the ultralight aircraft lets the pilot feel much better “in the air” than the ordinary aircraft.

There are different kinds of ultralight flying machines you can use to fly. Here are the five most important of them:

Fixed wing ultralight airplane

The most popular ultralight aircraft looks just like a standard airplane. The fixed wing ultralight is usually a two seat or single seat aircraft, can fly quite fast (up to 150 – 200kmh cruise speed) and is very stable.

The disadvantages of the fixed wing ultralight airplanes are its cost and the need of large hanger space. Since you can’t remove the wings, you need space which is both wide and long. Just like a normal airplane, the fixed wings ultralight needs a runaway to start flying.

Flex wing ultralight airplane (ultralight trike)

The flex wing ultralight aircraft is an easier and more affordable option for pilots who don’t require to fly on a “real airplane”. The flex wings are also smaller and lighter and their wing is flexible, just like the name of this aircraft suggests.

This wing gives you one big advantage – the ultralight trike takes much less place so it can be hangared in a barn or garage. The wing can be completely taken off if needed so the aircraft may need even less space.

The flex wing airplanes can also take off from a normal road, of course if there are no cars on it.

Float (ultralight flying boats)

One of the greatest things about the ultralight airplanes is that they are ultra-light. This allows them “land” on water if they have the required appliances. Many fixed wing or flex wing aircraft have water devices – such are often called amphibians or seaplanes.

One flying boat (float) on the other hand looks like a mix between a boat and an ultralight trike. Instead of the standard corpse, the float uses its fuselage as a floating hull. The float is the cheapest and easiest for maintenance seaplane, that’s why it is preferred by most enthusiasts.

Powered paraglider

If all you want is to be able to fly, you could do it with a simple paraglider. But the standard paraglider needs good wind condition and a high place for taking off. For this reason the aviation people created the powered paraglider – probably the simplest and most affordable ultralight flying machine.

The powered paraglider is not very different than his standard “brothers” besides the fact it has a powered propeller staying on the back of the pilot. If you want to take off, all you need to do is to run for few meters. You don’t need a mountain or a hill – with a powered paraglider you can take off from a smooth place.

Ultralight helicopter

After the simplest, let me introduce you the most complex ultralight flying machine – the ultralight helicopter. But regardless of its structural complexity – which is typical for any rotorcraft – the ultralight helicopter is much simpler than the real helicopters we can see at the airport.

Very often the ultralight helicopter has no cockpit or fuselage at all – or there is very light and simple version of them. That’s why the ultralight helicopters are not more expensive than the other aircraft – except of course the powered paraglider which beats them all. But if we talk about control complexity, the helicopter is definitely the hardest to control machine. This aircraft is not appropriate for beginner pilots.About the Author:

Well, it may take you slightly more than that to choose the right ultralight helicopter, to save the money, to buy it and to start flying with it. But it will take you exactly or less than ten minutes to read this article and to understand the most important that you need to know about owning an ultralight helicopter.

What is an Ultralight Helicopter?

It’s a helicopter like each other, but classified as ultralight, because… well because it is ultra light. The ultralight helicopters have much simpler and lighter construction than the regular ones, they often have no cockpit at all, can’t fly as high or as fast and can’t handle such load. The ultralight helicopters usually have one or two seats only.

Besides these differences, the ultralight helicopters are fully functional, have rotor wings and you need to know how to fly a helicopter if you want to fly on them.

Buying an Ultralight Helicopter

For some people the first time they hear about ultralight helicopter is when they talk to me. But don’t get miss leaded, it’s not because the helicopters are hard to find. Most people don’t know that there are literally hundreds of companies and small workshops producing ultralight helicopters or kits for them. Just search the Web and the aviation classified sites and you’ll see what I mean.

It’s still quite possible that you won’t find a company which is producing ultralight helicopters in your city. That’s why the best approach is to search the Web for sites with aviation classifieds or sites providing resource links about ultralight aircrafts. You’ll easy find all kind of used and new ultralight helicopters to be sold. The prices can start from as low as $10,000.

Building your Ultralight Helicopter

If you have some construction skills or just like to build things you can really build your helicopter on your own. This does not mean you have to be an aviation engineer and to construct it yourself. There are two options for you:

- To build your helicopter from a kit. Many companies sell ultralight aircrafts and helicopters in kit form (in fact the kit offers are more than the ready airplanes). The kits are documented and tested packages of parts ready for you to build. Usually it’s cheaper to build aircraft from a kit, but it takes significant amount of time and efforts. It’s a fun however.

- If you are a really big enthusiast, you can purchase only construction plans (usually the prices start from just $50). The plans contain information what materials and parts you need and how to build them. It’s harder than when using a kit, but can be a greater fun and can save you more money.

Flying your Ultralight Helicopter

Learning to fly your ultralight helicopter will certainly take you more than 10 minutes. In some countries you will be allowed to fly ultralight (in EU called “microlight”) without a pilot’s license. But it is strongly recommended that you attend an aircraft school and get real fly training from experienced instructors.

If you have not yet flown a helicopter, you should know it’s quite harder than flying a fixed wings airplane and the ultralight helicopters are not an exception. Get prepared for one of the greatest – and most rewarding – challenges in your life.

A pending deadline that would make it difficult to find aircraft that could legally be used for ultralight training will probably be extended or discarded by the FAA, EAA said this week. When the sport pilot rules were developed several years ago, the FAA allowed the use of two-seat ultralight E-LSA trainers only until Jan. 31, 2010. The idea was that by then, enough ultralight-like two-seat Special LSAs would be operating to take on the job of training ultralight pilots. However, only three manufacturers have produced S-LSAs that are suitable for the ultralight training market, and the down economy and the difficulty of obtaining financing have slowed sales. The lack of suitable trainers would create a safety issue, says EAA, “because people wanting to fly ultralights or ultralight-like aircraft will not be able to take flight training in ultralight-like aircraft.” The FAA is now evaluating the situation, EAA said, but one way or another, it seems likely that the current trainers now in use will be allowed to be used after the deadline.

No matter which remedy the FAA chooses, either extending the deadline or effectively eliminating it, owners will have to obtain a new airworthiness certificate and operating limitations, EAA said.

The feeling that a person gets when they are flying varies according to each person. Some people will absolutely love the sheer freedom that comes with soaring high in the skies. Others will feel sick at the mere thought of being way off the safe and steady ground. For the people who love the freedom of being in the skies can produce there are numerous ways to gain this feeling. This is where ultralight airplanes come in to our notice.

The ultralight airplanes are given many definitions in various countries but they basically mean the same thing. In the US an ultralight airplane is designated as being a single seater plane. It will have a 5 US fuel galleon limit, a top speed of 55 knots – or 102 km/h -, an empty weight that is less than 254 pounds, and a stall speed which doesn’t allow the plane to exceed speeds beyond 24 knots.

These limits puts ultralight airplanes as being planes like Gyroplanes, seaplanes, Quicksilver MX, Pterodactyls, Weight shift among others. The ultralight airplanes have been placed into three generations of airplanes. The first generation of ultralights were like hang gliders that had small engines placed on them. These engines allowed for another method of launching.

There are other ways of flying but these will not give you the freedom that you want with ultralight airplanes. When you are ready to fly in one of these planes make sure that you have received the proper instructions. You should also make sure that you are not flying your ultralight airplane in a crowded section of the city. By taking these precautions you can make sure that your plane trip is safe.

With ultralight airplanes people now have another way of experiencing flying. And while it is not the same as flying a jet plane you can still have fun. When you are looking at the different ultralight airplanes you will notice the same thing. This is the smooth build which caters to the environment around it.

As there is only one seat these planes are designed to travel for short distances. The many safety features which are part of these planes now makes it possible for anyone to fly these planes and have fun.

While these ultralight airplanes are ones where lots of people can’t travel in, there is a thrill to be found and experienced when you fly in one of these planes. You will find that some of these ultralight airplanes can provide you with a feeling of freedom that is sometimes missing in the normal planes. To be one with the sky take flight in ultralight airplanes and see just how fun it can be.
