YachtPals.com Boating and Sailing News 30 Nov Green Cargo – The Revival of the Sailing FreighterAfter several millennia of success, it was less than 100 years ago when steam power, and later the power of internal combustion engines, took the place of sail power when it came to ocean freight. Power-driven freighters could keep to a schedule much more effectively than could sailing ships. This meant that, for instance, wholesale buyers could keep less stock on hand (and thus reduce warehousing costs), because the ships could be relied upon to arrive on time, and keep the shelves stocked. In the world of business, practices are dictated by the bottom line, and the speed and reliability which steam and diesel provide eventually pushed sailing freighters into the history books – or so it was thought. Though the era of sail is said to have died out completely by the mid 20th century, perhaps it was just taking a nap. read more Direct Link
